Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is the foundation of our programs here at Sprit Winds Ranch to help at-risk youth and other marginalized groups. EAL is an experiential learning program that partners with horses as teachers and is an effective approach to human development that encourages individual and team growth. Participants learn effective communication and collaboration skills by means of interacting with their human partners and equine teachers to solve a series of enjoyable and often challenging problems. The exercises are developed to promote self-confidence through validated, hands-on experience; they are strong, uplifting, and collaborative.
All programs are hosted on the ranch inside our indoor arena, where we set up the course and have a separate area to sit and discuss each module as a group. The length of our programs ranges from 1, 4, 6, or 8 weeks long and partakes once a week (1 hour each time). Together with the horse, students are supported on a journey of self-discovery, where the horse teaches the ropes to better communication, collaboration, stronger awareness and understanding of coping skills.
EAL and Participants
Which participants would benefit from these workshops? There’s a lot of pressure on children and adults these days, and the tools available to help are often limited.
The participants who thrive in our program generally struggle with:
- Lack of confidence and low self esteem
- Being bullied
- Depression and anxiety
- Mood Control
- Paying attention and listening
- High Energy and ability to self-modulate
We have seen participants thrive in our workshops in the following ways:
- Increased confidence
- Stronger communication (verbal and non-verbal)
- Willingness to participate in activities
- Shift in attitude
- Schools have also noted improved attendance and participation in the school environment
- Smiles – We see lots of smiles!
